Berlin’s Best Off-Beat Christmas Markets 2021
Christmas in Germany just isn’t complete without a visit to a Christmas market. And despite the persistence of the pandemic, Christmas Markets are open in Berlin this year! Hooray!
To be extra safe during another COVID-19 Christmas, most Berlin Christmas markets are mandating masks and following the 2G rule. This means you must be either vaccinated (show digital certificate with QR code and ID) or have recovered (within 6 months) in order to join in on the Glühwein fun.
We’ve written about our favorite Berlin Christmas markets before, but here are our picks for some of Berlin’s more off-beat Christmas Markets.
LGBTIQ* Christmas Avenue
Drag bingo and a live stage show make this one of Germany’s most fabulous Weihnachtsmärkte. Tolerance and anti-discrimination reign at this fun-loving event, so don your sparkles and head down to Nollendorfplatz for some holiday shopping and revelry.
Where: Nollendorfplatz, 10777 Berlin
When: 22 November – 23 December, 2021
Christmas Market on the Wilmersdorfer Straße
Santa Claus himself makes an appearance at this spirited Christmas Market every day at 5pm to do what Santa Claus does best, give out small gifts. If that doesn’t put you in the holiday spirit, peruse the stalls lined up on this normally-busy-Berlin-street-turned-Christmasy-pedestrian-avenue.
Where: Wilmersdorfer Straße, 10629 Berlin
When: 21 November – 28 December, 2021
Alternativer Weihnachtsmarkt Friedrichshagen
For something a little different head outside the city center to Friedrichshagen. Every Sunday flea market vendors set up their stalls here, but for one weekend in December, the flea market becomes a Christmas market. Have a sustainable holiday this year and see if you can pick up gifts for everyone on your list!
Where: Schöneicher Straße 2, 12587 Berlin
When: December 18 + 19, 2021
Berliner Glühwald
Celebrate the season between the East Side Gallery and Mercedes Benz Arena. Fairy lights, pine trees, and open fires create an atmosphere Hansel and Gretel would love. Oh and there’s curling! Be sure to reserve the rink in advance.
Where: Mercedes Platz 1, 10243 Berlin
When: 12 November – 22 December, 2021
